Dover’s new Innovation Centre

I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening of Dover’s new innovation centre last week.  An old office accommodation building has been transformed into an excellent facility for new business to start and grow.  With high speed broadband (40mbs) and 24/7 access, low start up costs, free meeting spaces and car parking – I’m sure this will be a success.

New businesses always need help to get started and providing access to high quality premises is a good start, but help is also necessary with the administrative procedures that running your own business will bring.

Venice

Looking along the Venice waterfront

Just come back from a really good break in Venice.  Needed some time to recharge the batteries!!

Very interesting to compare the marketing of such a venue, against UK tourist attractions – London, Kent, Yorkshire etc..  Venice has a definite sense of where it is coming from, and consequently all the marketing draws you further in to enjoy the atmosphere. If you get the chance to go it’s well worth it.  The BA flight was a tribute to how transport should be.

Looking out from St Marks Square

Once in Venice look up Brek ristorante, with its free wifi, and sensibly priced food. Eating out in Venice can be very pricey. What a good example for a restaurant web site .. and I used to own a restaurant!   Find it Here

The Centre for Micro Business

Owl Communications is developing excellent links with The Centre for Micro Business.  Based at Kcollege, the centre has links with all 5 college bases, but has its main base in Tonbridge, Kent.

As it says on their website:

“We are a powerhouse for the development of ambitious micro businesses and organisations in the voluntary and social enterprise sectors, creating real growth through the fusion of support services delivered by expert business practitioners and practical business development activities.

The Centre for Micro Business is here to help businesses succeed.  Its objectives put people and performance at the centre of all we do.

Our aim is to enable business owners to build their businesses with an accredited programme using proven methodologies, techniques, tools and processes that underpin many successful businesses today.”

According to a government report:
80% of businesses starting without advice – fail
Of the remaining 20% …
60% seek advice – and they succeed!

Creative, Media and Communications

Attended an excellent conference hosted by KEB and KCC at The Maidstone Studios yesterday.  Over 200 delegates were present and discussed topics including, how or whether to compete with London, and possible networks to help small business in this sector in Kent work more collaboratively.

Details of the presentations, and a chance to complete the questionnaire from the day are available on the KEB website where a full event report will shortly be published.
